Our bet is that industrial systems (SCADA, Building Management Systems, automation systems, PLCs and other proprietary hardware) will be replaced by software apps in the near future.

A similar transition happened with smartphones about 10 years ago. Hardware that used to exist separately (like a Sat Nav, Camera, Calculator, etc.) quickly consolidated into a single unit, with each function running as an app, sharing the same underlying hardware.

It made so much sense that we've never looked back…but this was a user experience revolution, not a technology revolution.
The change to 'software defined' functions had a number of industry-altering implications when it happened for smartphones. It means that anyone could publish an app, without having to design, manufacture and certify the underlying hardware platform. For the developer, this dramatically reduced the capital investment needed to deliver a solution to a customer.

On top of that, developers could tap into an ecosystem that took care of many of the core features that were often the most difficult ones to build: platform security, automatic software updates, payment processing, software distribution, etc.

It meant they could focus on building 'one function really well' and iterating fast.
