Imagine walking into a garden center a decade from now, looking for something to liven up your backyard. A rose bush? Fruit tree? How much sun does the rose need? How much space will the fruit tree take up?

It’s a concept that Philips, the technology company, and a group of researchers first imagined more than 20 years ago—and what today might be considered the ultimate convergence of the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI). It’s an elegant notion—that physical environments can be integrated with sensors and intelligent systems that are aware of people and can interact with them to adapt to their needs.

No longer just an elegant notion, though, ambient intelligence is now emerging as a marketplace phenomenon. By 2020, IoT devices are expected to exceed 26 billion units worldwide, and ambient applications will generate more than 8 billion downloads in applications such as personal assistants, social communication, health and fitness, augmented reality and local search applications.

Most of us now have at least a passing familiarity with ambient intelligence—the idea that you can walk into a room and interact with Alexa or Siri to keep track of a shopping list, book a ride to the airport, turn up the AC, or create and play a song list. But those are just early-stage proofs of concept, according to developers and others in the space.
