Terrain and Environmental Contingencies: Installed in geographic locations where changing environmental conditions and temperature are the norms, IoT devices undergo relentless wear and tear. For example, Boeing tracks its Jet engine using IoT, and the temperatures can rise to >1,500ºC, and even the coldest part of an engine runs at +/-300ºC. Besides, in my Vaayu example, the wind turbines might be installed on mountains and difficult terrains. In one of my projects, we detected a sudden jump in data latency. Data from the device was intermittent. Later on the examination, we found that some of the IoT devices were solar powered. Though solar power sounds good, in reality, on cloudy days it becomes an issue. The solution was to alternate power with a battery when low solar energy was detected. Now another IoT component monitors the battery power and produces additional data tracking the battery’s health – Lol, Internet of things is pure fun, and the fun never ends 🙂
