        How many engineers does it take to provision a sensor?
        What does it even mean for a sensor to be provisioned?
        For our purposes, it means the sensor is installed on site, configured to upload it’s data securely and our ERP is updated with what the sensor is monitoring.
        Getting a sensor to upload it’s readings can be as simple as turning it on and making sure it can talk to the gateway.
        It can be involved as well, having to install device certificates on each sensor, provisioning it in the sensor portal and updating your ERP to associate a sensor with a piece of equipment.
        The vagaries of how a sensor gets its readings into a system that can do something with them is device provisioning.
        Let’s start at the end first; when a sensor is installed the platform (and your ERP system) are updated with which sensor is monitoring what piece of equipment or location.
        With the easy part done, let’s move onto how the sensor uploads it’s data.
        There are a couple of ways this can be done: sensor uploads data directly to the platform/server or sensor sends data to the gateway/edge device that uploads the data.
        Often, the manufacturer sets up a secure communication channel between the sensor and the gateway, so you only need to provision the gateway.
        Let’s run through a few common issues that you can run into when dealing with sensor provisioning.
        First one is having sensors that are pre-provisioned for a specific piece of equipment.
        While it may not seem like a big deal if someone can read the sensor data for some machine, it’s not just the data you have to worry about.
        IoT security is still in it’s early stages but given how many touch-points you’re dealing with when it comes to devices reading and uploading data, a hacker can cause a lot of trouble for your business.
        Provisioning means letting an installer who’s slapping a sensor on a piece of machinery in your factory somehow connect that sensor with security, networking and asset management
