Micro-service architecture: Network functions are decoupled to multiple services, thereby adopting again Enterprise application architecture : Microservice based architecture.
We (the ICN team) believe that the ICN project in LFE/Akraino is a comprehensive solution to deploy 5G network functions in core network and deployment of UPF & business applications in edge clouds.
It not only provides integrated K8s platform with right eco-system ingredients, but also provides multi cluster (edge and cloud) orchestration to deploy distributed application such as 5G across multiple edges and clouds.
First, we describe this scenario and then describe how ICN can help in hosting and deploying 5G functions.
5G core network functions in two sites.
Any traffic that does not belong to local applications to go to Internet via UPF in 5G core network.
Multi Cluster (edge & cloud) orchestrator to deploy 5G core network functions across multiple core clouds as well to deploy UPF in multiple Edge clouds.
WAN secure overlay to connect multiple edge clouds, core networks and central clouds for reachabilty of services.
        (1) ICN Platform: Many believe that 5G would be cloud native and K8s is the best way to orchestrate 5G network functions.
ICN bundles ISTIO service mesh thereby helping securing communications among the network functions.
(3)Provider Networks: 5G UPF is expected to communicate with gNB, which can be outside of the K8s cluster of UPF.
OVN4K8sNFV feature of ICN can help in creating (enabling) provider networks in K8s clusters as well as exposing these networks via virtual Ethernet interfaces in the UPF.
(4)Service Function Chaining: 5G UPF can be configured to steer the traffic to local applications as shown in the picture.
OVN4K8sNFV feature of ICN takes care of creation of virtual networks, creations of service chaining and placing any security functions on the chain
